LAGOS – A 28-year-old man, Oluwaseun Clegg, on Friday appeared before an Igbosere Magistrates’ Court in Lagos charged with attempting to pay some fake naira notes into his Wema bank account.
Clegg, who resides at No. 2, Odufege St., Lagos Island, is facing charges of conspiracy and being in possession of forged naira notes.
The accused, however, denied the charges.
The Prosecutor, Sgt. Emmanuel Ajayi, told the court that the accused committed the offences alongside others now at large at noon on Sept. 17, at the Ikoyi branch of Wema Bank Plc.
He said that Clegg, with the intent of defrauding the bank, tendered to a teller three counterfeit N500 notes.
Ajayi said that the accused in an effort to trick bank officials mixed the counterfeit notes with genuine ones. [eap_ad_2] He said that luck, however, ran out on Clegg when the vigilant teller discovered the counterfeit notes and handed over the accused to the bank’s security guards.
The prosecutor said that the accused, when interrogated by the bank security personnel, confessed to have more fake notes in his residence.
According to Ajayi, the offences contravened Sections 364(2) and 409 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.
Section 364 prescribes three years imprisonment for forgery.
The Magistrate, Mrs Funmilayo Dalley granted the accused bail in the sum of N5,000 with two sureties in like sum and adjourned the case to Oct. 17 for mention. (NAN)[eap_ad_3]
