Abuja – The National Commission for Mass Literacy, Adult and Non-Formal Education (NMEC), said 13 community learning centres were being built across the country to help improve literacy level in the country.
Prof. Abba Haladu, the Executive Secretary of NMEC said this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja on Friday.
Haladu said the centres would help empower benefitting communities get involved in literacy and vocational skills acquisition.
“Basically these community learning centres are to provide opportunities for skill acquisition, most especially for women and girls.
“As part of the efforts to ensure that our youths have the required skills they need to practice some occupations so they can earn a living,” he said.
Haladu, who said the centres were already in various stages of completion were being built with the support of the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC).
“10 out of the 13 centres are almost completed; there are just a few issues that need to be sorted out before they will be taken over by the state agencies of mass education.
“The remaining three are at various stages of completion; some 50 per cent, some 70 per cent,’’ he said.
