Abuja- Mrs Susan Ajenge, FCT Sector Commander, Federal Road Safety Commission, (FRSC), has urged motorists in the FCT to cooperate with the commission and sister agencies during mass rallies.
Ajenge made the call on Thursday during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja while reacting to the traffic situation around Eagles Square, venue of the recent PDP National Convention.
According to Ajenge, it is the responsibility of the command to ensure safe and easy movement in the FCT during public events.
“If people are going to do road shows or anything that is going to invoIve use of roads, we champion the cause and lead them so that we don’t record crash or hindrance by people using the roads.
“ And for all the political rallies in FCT, we are going to ensure traffic control and crowd control during such events.
“We block roads to some areas during such rallies to prevent any security threat that might be caused by vehicular traffic in such areas and this is in the interest of the people.
“We advise motorists to cooperate with us by being orderly during such events so that people can get to their destinations safely,” she said.
The FRSC boss advised motorists to drive with caution during political rallies or risk arrest for reckless driving.
“Irrespective of where you come from, you may be apprehended for reckless driving and be given some orientation on safe driving or get booked if it is a serious road safety violation,” she said.
She also said that the command would use its personnel and equipment to ensure safe and easy movement in the FCT during the yuletide.
Ajenge urged motorists to drive with care during festive periods, saying “carefulness is the distance between this year and the coming year”.
NAN recalls that Mr Boboye Oyeyemi, Corps Marshal of the FRSC, recently said measures lined up during the yuletide include massive deployment of personnel and logistics along critical corridors of the highways.
“Patrol vehicles, alcholyzers, radar guns and heavy duty tow trucks and motor bikes will be used to ensure road safety in the country,” he said. (NAN)
