LAGOS – The Lagos State boxing team on Friday emerged winners of a one-day boxing event held at the Mobolaji Johnson Sports Centre Yaba, Lagos.
The contest was part of the Lagos State Boxing Association’s celebration of the Workers Day, as well as to prepare the teams for national events.
In the female 60kg class Yetunde Odunuga of Lagos defeated the regaining National Sports Festival champion, Floral Okegbugwu of the Nigerian Army, 2-1.
Okegbugwu told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) shorly after the match that the army would seek a re-match.
“The Army will avenge the defeat. We will win all the bouts so as to redeem our name. My loss was due to fatigue, having trained all night for this bout,” she said.
In other results in Men’s 52kg class, Sani Yinusa of the Army defeated Hammed Nurudeen of Lagos, 2-1 and in another men’s match in the 56kg class, Riliwan Lawal of Army defeated Salau Nurudeen of Lagos 2-1.
However, in men’s 60kg category, Aliu Ibraheem of Lagos defeated Sunday Nkama of the Army, 2-1.
Adegoke Oyekeyed of Lagos in men’s 64kg class was declared unfit to continue in the third round, after Rufai Hammed of the army left him punch drunk.
In the 69kg male class, Elegbede Samuel of Lagos defeated Lanre Baduru of the Army, 3-0 while in men’s 81kg class Femi Akintayo of Lagos defeated Muri Sango via a technical knockout (TKO) in round one.
