Abuja (Sundiata Post) – It is scarce to find an Army General who goes to the war front with troops leading the battle while Commanding the battalion.
Our correspondent observed that the new General Officer Commanding (GOC), 3 Division Nigerian Army and Commander Operation Safe Haven (OPSH), Maj.-Gen. Abdulsalam Abubakar, is more of a field General than an officer who takes the back seat and give instructions to troops.
This can be attested to when he led sector 3 Operation Hadin Kai (OPHK) and Multinational Joint Task Force, Monguno, an LGA in Borno State.
He also proved himself to be a field officer when he was the GOC 7 Division Maiduguri, a Division he was transferred from to lead troops as GOC 3 Division and Commander OPSH in Jos.
Charging troops to be competent in using their weapons while combating enemies of the State, Gen. Abubakar, said their proficiency will upscale them into better combatant soldiers.
The GOC gave the charge in Jos on Friday at the end of the Bi-annual Range classification exercise organized to improve the proficiency of troops in handling weapons.
According to him: “The country is facing multifaceted security challenges and therefore I want troops to master the art of using their weapons effectively.
“Continuous training and practice will upscale and develop the professional skills troops need to counter the current security challenges.
“I will ensure every opportunity is employed to make sure troops improve on the use of their weapons.
“You can only become proficient with constant training”, the GOC said.
Our correspondent reports that the Bi-annual Range classification exercise was organized for both officers and soldiers to train and improve on the effective use of their weapons.
