LAGOS (Sundiata Post) – Princess Abiodun Oyefusi, the 2023 Deputy Governorship Candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in Lagos State has congratulated Mrs Mojisola Meranda , on her emergence as new Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly.
Oyefusi, a renowned advocate for women’s empowerment, extended her congratulations to the Speaker, in a statement on Wednesday in Lagos, describing her emergence as a beacon of hope for residents.
Reports that Meranda (APC- Apapa I) is the first woman to hold this esteemed position in the history of the House.
He said: “The Meranda’s emergence is a groundbreaking achievement, not only for Lagos State but for the entire nation.
“This historic emergence as Speaker is a monumental milestone. Your success will inspire countless young girls and women who aspire to lead and contribute meaningfully to our society.”
She highlighted the significance of this milestone in advancing gender equity and fostering greater inclusivity in leadership and governance.
Calling on the new speaker to exceed the accomplishments of her male predecessors, Oyefusi urged her to lead with vision.
She urged Meranda to ensure impactful legislation that would address the needs of residents, particularly in the areas of equity, innovation and gender representation.
Oyefusi reaffirmed her commitment to supporting the speaker, while also expressing confidence in Meranda’s ability to deliver exceptional leadership.
She said that Meranda’s election would inspire women across Nigeria.
Reports that the emergence of Meranda, has been widely celebrated as a significant step toward bridging the gender gap in politics.
Reports that Obasa (APC-Agege1 ), a sixth-term lawmaker, serving his third term as Speaker, was on Monday removed by lawmakers
32 out of the 40 lawmakers, at an emergency plenary, impeached Obasa via voice votes over alleged gross misconduct.
Reports that the Assembly subsequently elected and swore in Deputy Speaker, Mrs Mojisola Meranda (APC-Apapa I) to replace Obasa while Mr Fatai Adebola (APC- Ibeji-Lekki I) was elected as the Deputy Speaker.
The House also suspended the Clerk of the Assembly, Mr Olalekan Onafeko, indefinitely during the plenary and dissolved all principal positions and standing committees. (NAN)
