Mimiko promises to host Sunshine Stars, athletes before leaving office

Akure –  Gov. Olusegun Mimiko of Ondo State, on Wednesday said  he would host the Sunshine Stars players and the state athletes to a dinner before  leaving office in February.

Mimiko spoke on Wednesday in Akure, while receiving the pre-season trophy won by Sunshine Stars in his office.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the governor would end his tenure on Feb. 24, 2017 after two terms in office.

The governor commended the players for winning the inaugural tournament organised by the South West Football Association (FA) in Lagos, saying, “the team deserves to be celebrated”.

Highlighting the team’s achievements under his administration, Mimiko said that they twice got to the semi-finals of both the CAF Confederations Cup and the Champions League.

He also said that the Sunshine Queens’ Federation Cup victory sums up his administration’s passion for developing talents from the grassroots.

Earlier, Dayo Awude, the state Commissioner for Youth Development and Sports, thanked the governor for providing the enabling environment for burden talents to showcase themselves to the world.

Awude described sports as good means of livelihood for youths in the state and the country at large.

Also, the chairman, Ondo State Football Agency, Dapo Ajibade, said that the feat was the result of hard work and commitment of the team.

Ajibade commended Mimiko’s initial plans to discover and empower talents from the grassroots.
