Festus Keyamo, the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, has criticized the Nigeria Air project initiated by the previous Buhari-led government, calling it fraudulent and announcing its suspension.
Keyamo condemned the project for its lack of transparency and excessive foreign involvement, emphasizing the need for indigenous ownership to ensure the national carrier benefits Nigerians. He stressed that a truly national carrier should be owned and controlled by Nigerians for the country’s economic benefit.
In his address, Keyamo also outlined various efforts to boost economic development within the aviation sector. Key initiatives include the resumption of cargo flights and the ongoing resolution of issues related to the second runway at Abuja’s Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport.
Keyamo highlighted the successful clearance of trapped funds belonging to foreign airlines and emphasized the government’s commitment to prioritizing and supporting local airlines. This support aims to maximize Nigeria’s benefits under various international agreements.
Additionally, Keyamo announced the commencement of open sky operations with the United States, which will allow unrestricted flights, diverse aircraft deployment, and multiple entry points into Nigeria. This move is expected to enhance connectivity and boost the aviation sector’s growth.
