ABUJA – In order to reduce road traffic fatalities by 50 per cent, the Minister of Works, Mr Mike Onolememen, on Tuesday inaugurated the first edition of the Road Safety Guidelines (RSG 2014).
Onolememen inaugurated the guidelines at the induction of the Technical Advisory Committee of the Nigerian Building and Road Research Institute (NBRRI) in Abuja.
“As we launch the road safety guidelines developed by the Nigerian Building and Road Research Institute (NBRRI) today, I applaud the vision of the institute toward ensuring the safety of Nigerian citizens on our roads.
“The Road Safety Guidelines popularly aligns with the Federal Road development project objectives to reduce fatalities on Nigeria road by 50 per cent in order to improve safety level on selected safe road corridors.
“In the past few years, the ministry of works has championed this particular federal road development project in collaboration with the World Bank. “It is my hope that the research being undertaken by NBRRI will help to deepen the gains of the federal road development project as we go along.“
The minister said that the guidelines would set a standard approach to accidents data analysis which would help in addressing the developmental challenges in the sector.
He said although NBRRI was under the Federal Ministry of Science and Technology, its activities were of interest to the works ministry and the entire road sub-sector.
According to him, the mandate of NBRRI is similar to that of the works ministry as it is expected to conduct research on road design and construction, structural design for buildings and bridges.
Onolememen, however, called for closer collaboration between NBRRI and works ministry in the delivery of better and safer roads to Nigerian road users. (NAN)
