ABUJA – The Minister of Youth Development, Mr Boni Haruna, on Thursday urged corporate organisations to key into the initiative of fire disaster prevention and safety awareness campaign.
Haruna made the call when he received the President, Fire Disaster Prevention and Safety Awareness Association of Nigeria, Alhaji Badanga Ahmed, in his office in Abuja.
According to him, individuals and corporate organisations must understand their roles in the task of preventing fire disasters.
“It is true that one of our problems is lack of knowledge on how to deal with fire disaster.
“It is always seen as government problem but as citizens or organisations, we have a role to play.
“It is important we have basic knowledge of how to ensure safety from fire disasters,’’ Haruna said.
He commended the association for mobilising the youths to join the vanguard for the realisation of the initiative in the country.
Haruna said that the ministry would partner with the association in raising awareness among the corps members by including fire prevention and disaster module in the orientation programme.
He said that the initiative was part of the Federal Government policy under the transformation agenda to make youth better citizens using the platform of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) scheme.
Earlier, the President of the Association, Alhaji Badanga Ahmed said the association was committed to raising the level of awareness on fire safety in the country from the present estimation.
He said that the association intends to increase the awareness from two to 95 per cent by the year 2020 based on careful and strategic planning.
Ahmed said that the association was using NYSC as its strategic plan to inculcate in the youths the culture of fire safety as part of their daily routine. (NAN)
