Hanoi –  Vietnamese authorities have discovered the body of a British backpacker reported missing nearly a week ago.

The man was said to be on his way to climb the Fanispan, Vietnam’s highest mountain, a local official said on Thursday.

The Deputy Chairman of Sa Pa District People’s Committee, Nguyen Truong told newsmen that Aiden Webb, 22, from Norwich, fell into a mountain gorge in Hoang Lien Son National Park in Sa Pa town.

“Rescuers were waiting for police to examine the scene,’’ he said.

The victim had sent an SOS message on Saturday to his girlfriend, saying he was injured and needed help.

However, Truong said that more than 200 people took part in the search. (dpa/NAN)
