The police on Friday arraigned a mother, Rebecca Osagie, 49, in an Igbosere Chief Magistrates’ Court, Lagos, charged with assaulting her daughter.
The accused, who resides at Mama Garden Estate in Victoria Island, Lagos, is standing trial for allegedly slapping her daughter.
The prosecutor, ASP Eniola Ekuma, told the court that the accused committed the offence on October 17, at the above address.
“The accused unlawfully assaulted one Miss Susan Osagie in her 20s, by slapping her on her face.
“The mother had a misunderstanding with her daughter and this led to the accused slapping her daughter.
“More facts on the case will be revealed at the next adjourned date,” she said.
The prosecutor said that the offence contravened Section 170 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.
Section 170 provides that any person who unlawfully assaults another is guilty of a misdemeanour and is liable, if no greater punishment is provided, to one year imprisonment.
However, the accused pleaded not guilty to the charge.
The Chief Magistrate, Mrs A.A. Adedayo, granted the accused N50,000 bail with one surety, and adjourned the case to Nov. 13 for trial.
