Msgr Somide marks 60 years in priesthood

Lagos- The oldest living Catholic Priest in Nigeria, Msgr. Patrick Somide, will on Monday celebrate the 60th anniversary of his ordination as a priest.

A statement by the Director, Social Communications, Catholic Archdiocese of Lagos, Msgr Gabriel Osu, said on Sunday in Lagos that Somide was born on Jan. 4, 1920.

“To celebrate the epoch making event, there will be a Thanksgiving mass in his honour on Monday, Dec. 8, 2014 at the Church of Resurrection, Magodo, by 10 a.m.

“He is a priest of the Catholic Archdiocese of Lagos and has worked in several parishes within and outside the state.

“Msgr Somide helped to establish the St Rita Society in Nigeria in the 1950’s,” the statement said.

He said that the priest was presently in-residence at Catholic Church of the Resurrection, Magodo.

The statement said that Somide still finds time to counsel and minister to the spiritual needs of the faithful. (NAN)
