Pay TV channel, Multichoice, has confirmed that plans are still on for the company to own a club in the Nigerian league.
The company owns a club SuperSport United in the South African PSL and hopes to replicate same in Nigeria.
“Maybe we’ll start a SuperSport team or buy one instead. We have a very successful league contender in SuperSport United in South Africa. Some of the boys in the national team, the Bafana Bafana, come from that team. They’ve won some silverware and had a bit of African representation, which may not be good enough but earned them a place as one of the top four contenders,” General Manager Marketing, MultiChoice Nigeria, Martin Mabutho, said. [eap_ad_2] He said MultiChoice was committed to ensuring the success of the Nigerian league, adding that it had the potential of competing with the best leagues in the world.
Mabutho added, “The Nigerian Premier League is in a definitely better position than it was before we got involved and it will continue to grow at an even faster rate with our involvement. It is a property that we treasure; it is a property that we foresee being up there at least at par with some of the leading leagues on the continent that are on SuperSport.
“We have picked up a lot of rights to broadcast many leagues and we are watching them. We have Zimbabwe, Botswana, Tanzania, Kenya Premier Leagues, which I must say is quite impressive judging by attendance and we have to take our own.
“After all, this is where the champions come from, this is where the best performing team at the World Cup comes from and this is where the reigning African champions come from.” (Punch)[eap_ad_3]
