Another devastating accident has occurred on Karu Bridge, near Karu Site in Abuja, leading to the deaths of several individuals on Friday.
According to Daily Post, a reporter at the scene revealed that the crash was caused by a cement-loaded truck which experienced brake failure while coming down Kugbo hill. The truck reportedly collided with several vehicles and their occupants before attempting to escape. However, it was intercepted by commercial motorcyclists at Karu Roundabout.
This tragedy comes just weeks after a similar fatal incident happened on the same Karu Bridge in March. In that case, a Dangote trailer powered by compressed natural gas (CNG) also lost its brakes and rammed into multiple vehicles, resulting in several deaths.
In a related incident, less than two weeks ago, a major crash occurred around the NIPCO filling station area on the Lagos-Ibadan expressway, claiming at least seven lives.
Florence Okpe, spokesperson for the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Ogun State, confirmed the incident through a statement issued from Abeokuta. She stated that the accident happened at 7:00 a.m. and involved three vehicles: a Mack truck with the plate number SEY 363 YY, a tanker marked T2900LA, and a bus with registration LSD 180 YA.
Okpe disclosed that 15 people were involved—13 men and two women. Out of these, four sustained injuries while seven died on the spot. She explained that the crash occurred due to excessive speeding and the Mack truck driver losing control, which led to the fatal collision.
The injured victims were taken to Divine Touch Hospital and Glory Centre Hospital in Ibafo, while the deceased were deposited at the Idera morgue in Sagamu.
The FRSC Sector Commander, Akinwumi Fasakin, expressed sympathy to the bereaved families. He also urged individuals whose loved ones were traveling that morning and have not yet been heard from to contact the FRSC office in Ibafo for updates.
