Lagos – A budding musician, Fortune Ebel, on Friday called on government to fund the entertainment sector adequately to boost the nation’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
Ebel told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos that given the vibrancy in the entertainment industry the sector could raise the nation’s GDP by up to 10 per cent.
He noted that the industry was long overdue for government’s intervention to expand its scope, urging the authorities not to overlook the derivable benefits.
“Our partners in other climes of the world seem to have some level of revolving funds with which their craft can be developed and expanded to attain stardom with little interest rates.
“We have the skill and ability to grow the sector much more than what we see abroad, which is proven by the dependence of our audience solely on what we produce locally.
According to him, government’s involvement will create an avenue for exponential growth that will encourage every contributor to give his best to the development of the sector.
“Every entertainer has the potential of giving his best that can gain international recognition but the environment really does not give the needed support.
“Growing the sector to greater heights is very possible only if government and corporate organsations will intervene and make adequate provisions to aid the sector.’’
The musician stated that satellite television networks were making so much from local contents that were derived from Nigeria.
“But if we invest in the entertainment sector the way we should, we can do much more than is obtainable at the moment.

“Other Africans have brought innovations which are driven and sustained by our talents in Nigeria but that is because we don’t have platforms for that.
“If we invest resources into entertainment, it surely will generate massive financial resources that can be used in growing the economy in the long run,’’ he said. (NAN)
