LAGOS – “My wife lost four pregnancies to excessive alcohol consumption,” a 49-year old businessman, Mr Rasak Hassan, has told an Igando Customary Court in Lagos.
He told the court on Tuesday that his wife of three years, Biliki, was addicted to and fond of alcohol which made her to lose pregnancy on four different occasions.
“My wife cannot do without drinking alcohol; she will drink and get drunk and start misbehaving at home and in the public.
“On many occasions, I reported her to her family members who will come and talk to her, but she refused to change.
“My wife always embarrassed me in the public by fighting and raining curses on me.
“My wife will descend on me and tear my clothes whenever we fought.
“One day, she ran after me in the street after we had misunderstanding and tore my clothes to shreds. It was a Good Samaritan that clothed my nakedness’’, the petitioner said.
He pleaded with the court to separate them, adding that he was no longer interested in the marriage. [eap_ad_1] “I am tired of being a husband to a drunkard and afraid she may kill me one day,’’ the estranged husband said.
The respondent, Mrs Biliki Hassan, 34, a trader, told the court that she often drank alcohol, but not regularly.
“I take alcohol to keep my body and soul together, but I did not take it in excess and not every day as claimed by my husband.
According to her, she used to abort her pregnancies whenever her husband offended her.
“I don’t use alcohol to terminate my pregnancies; I have what I used to do abortion whenever he offends me,” Biliki claimed that she was a peace maker and that it was her husband that always annoyed her.
She denied allegations that she usually embarrassed his husband in public, claiming that she accorded him due respect always.
The mother of one begged the court not to grant her husband’s request, asserting that she still loved him.
The President of the Court, Mr R.I. Adeyeri, adjourned the case to Sept. 10 for further hearing. (NAN)
