NADECO USA has strongly criticized remarks made by Felix Morka, the National Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), against Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 election and a prominent opposition leader.
In a statement released on January 7, 2025, NADECO USA labeled Morka’s comments as “anti-democratic, appalling, and dangerous.” During a televised appearance, Morka reportedly stated, “Peter Obi has crossed the line so many times and has it coming to him whatever he gets.” NADECO described the statement as a calculated attempt to incite harm against Obi and stifle opposition voices.
The organization also dismissed Morka’s claim that Obi left no legacy during his tenure as governor of Anambra State, calling it a baseless falsehood. NADECO highlighted Obi’s achievements in governance, fiscal discipline, and infrastructure development, which have been widely recognized both nationally and internationally.
NADECO USA emphasized its commitment to democratic principles, condemning the APC’s actions as part of a broader strategy to silence critics and undermine opposition ahead of the 2027 elections. The statement accused the APC, under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s leadership, of fostering repressive behavior and attempting to erode democratic values.
“Threats, intimidation, and divisive rhetoric have no place in civil society. These actions represent a direct attack on democracy, accountability, and freedom of expression,” NADECO said.
The pro-democracy organization praised Peter Obi for his commitment to nonviolence and adherence to the rule of law despite repeated provocations. It also questioned the APC’s accusations, asking, “What ‘lines’ has he crossed other than exposing the administration’s failures?”
NADECO warned Nigerians to remain vigilant as the country approaches the 2027 elections, citing a pattern of increasing repression, including the recent arrest of activist Dele Farotimi. The organization called on citizens to reject divisive tactics and uphold democratic values.
Finally, NADECO demanded that the APC cease its inflammatory rhetoric and focus on addressing the pressing needs of Nigerians. “We will not stand by while threats and coercion are used to suppress political opposition and intimidate advocates for change,” said Lloyd F. Ukwu, President and CEO of NADECO USA.
