IBADAN – The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) in Ibadan, Oyo State, has received expired drugs estimated at N2m from the Ibadan Chapter of the Association of Community Pharmacists of Nigeria (ACPN).
This is contained in a statement signed by Mr Gboyega Osayemi, a NAFDAC Public Relations Officer, which was made available to newsmen in Ibadan on Sunday.
According to the statement, the development shows the compliance with efforts to rid the society of expired drugs and food products.
The statement said that the association, led by its chairperson, Mrs Bolanle Salako, handed over the expired drugs voluntarily to the agency.
Salako said the drugs were seized from various drugs stores in the state, adding that they were classified as Prescription only Medicines (POMs) and Over the Counter Medicines (OTCs).
She said the gesture was to complement the efforts of NAFDAC in ensuring the safety of drugs and delivery of quality healthcare services to the people.
Mr Benjamin Haruna, the State Coordinator of NAFDAC, while receiving the drugs, lauded the efforts of the association.
He said that such action would surely prevent the stocking, sales and distribution of expired drugs in the state.
The agency, however, warned the society on the implication of consuming expired drugs, which it said were harmful to the immune system. (NAN)
