Lafia – The Nasarawa State Government has acquired 7,000 mattresses and 3,500 double beds to be distributed to public schools in the state.
The state Commissioner for Education, Mr Tijjani Ahmed, disclosed this to newsmen on Tuesday in Lafia.
Ahmed said that the beds and mattresses would be distributed to all the 28 public boarding schools in the state before the beginning of the new academic session.
Ahmed also said that plans had been concluded to establish an Information Communication Centre (ICT) at the headquarters of the ministry in Lafia.
He said it was unfortunate that the ministry before now had no ICT centre, and he wondered how it could drive the teaching of ICT in its schools without having its own centre.
The commissioner said that the ministry could not be run effectively without an ICT centre hence the need to establish one.
“We have decided to dedicate N500, 000 every month from the N1million overhead cost to improve facilities in the ministry,” he added.
On the committee set up by the ministry to conduct census of private schools in the state, Ahmed said that its findings would soon be made public as it had concluded its assignment.
“The committee discovered the number of private schools registered and the illegal ones; how many male and female students enrolled in the schools and their facilities,’’ he said.
Ahmed said that the findings would help the ministry in its planning, allocation of projects as well as knowing the number of private schools operating legally and illegally in the state.
According to him, the committee has already finished its assignment and submitted the report, while the management of the ministry is looking into the report.
