Abuja – The Deputy Clerk to National Assembly, Mr Olaide Adelani, on Wednesday challenged the media on journalism ethics, saying their role was crucial in informing Nigerians on the legislature’s activities.
Adelani made the call at a capacity-building workshop for Reporters of the national assembly magazine, “The Legislative Digest.’’
The workshop entitled “Training on Features and Report Writing’’ was organised by the national assembly management.
Adelani called on journalists to be objective in their reportage, saying that objectivity was the only way the media could be considered as vital in the country’s democracy.
He said “The Legislative Digest is necessitated by the need to educate Nigerians on the workings of the national assembly.
“One of the basic objectives of resuscitating it is to tell the national assembly stories from our own perspective.’’
Similarly, the Editor-in-Chief of the magazine, Mr Jerry Uhuo, said that the publication was designed to give the national assembly a voice.
“It will serve as a platform to bridge the information gap between the institution and the public.
“The peculiar nature of the national assembly has its own style and not many people out there know the working of this arm of government.
“Some people look at the national assembly as an executive arm of government.
“The Legislative Digest is a platform that should inform and educate people properly in order to differentiate between the executive and the legislature,’’ Uhuo said.
The resource person, Mr Magnus Eze, urged the participants to be factual in their reports and ensure that they applied the principles of reporting appropriately.
Eze said that the media would become better instruments of national integration if organizations made conscious efforts to promote the country’s democracy.
