Lagos – Mr Jacob Fayeun, President, Lagos Chapter of the Nigeria Automobile Technician Association (NATA), has called for government-private partnership for the training of automobile technicians to for greater efficiency.
Fayeun made the call on Tuesday in an interview with News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos.
President of the association added that the training would enable technicians to develop skills on how to detect and repair modern vehicles like their colleagues in developed countries.
He said that more than 90 per cent of automobile mechanics did not know how to operate computers and machines used to detect fault in cars.
Fayeun said that adequate knowledge of computer by mechanics would improve their skill on the job.
“Nigeria is blessed with talented people who can build a car if they receive adequate training.
“We are begging the private sector to partner with government to train most of our members.
“A lot of vehicles are off road as a result of trial and error by mechanics, especially those operating on highways popularly called road side mechanics.
“Most of the mechanics do not learn the work with modern tools and vehicles, so in the process of repairing cars, they destroy other things,” Fayeun said.
The association’s president also appealed to government at all levels to intensify efforts on training of NATA members.
He, however, commended Oando Nig. Plc, Federal Road Safety Commission and the Federal Government for conducted training programmes for members of the association.
Fayeun called on members to get registered for any training programme aimed at boosting their knowledge and gain more experience on how to repair modern vehicles.
He cautioned drivers to drive with care to avoid accidents, especially as the yuletide season approaches.
