ABUJA – The Nigerian Navy has started a mentorship programme to build the capacity of its personnel, Rear Admiral Goddy Anyankpele , the Flag Officer Commanding Naval Training Command, said.Anyankpele made the disclosure in Abuja at the third quarter Mentorship Leadership and Career Talk .
He said that the programme, which would hold in Abuja, Lagos, Delta, Port Harcourt and Calabar, would boost efficiency of personnel.
He added that the mentorship programme was designed for junior officers to engender progress in a positive direction.
The officer said “capacity building is key to manpower development, especially junior officers.
“The Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Usman Jubrin, on assumption of duty, directed renewed focus on human resource development in the NN through activation of the mentorship programme for junior officers.
“He believes that to keep hope alive and for the navy to maintain steady growth progressively, the capacity of young officers must be nurtured painstakingly.”
Anyankpele said that the the programme was conceptualised to enhance career and professional development of junior officers for optimal productivity. and to harness the potential of junior officers efficiency;
“It is also designed to inculcate a sense of purpose in the junior officers and for attainment of fulfilled career in the NN.
“It will enable junior officers and ratings to mirror their career after the exemplary conduct and performance of senior officers.”
He said the overall aim was to encourage junior officers and ratings to aim for excellence and work hard to achieve their goals and aspirations.
In his lecture entitled “Planning Your Career for Progress in Service, Mr Olufemi Johnson, the Head of Training and Consultancy , Institute of Directors, said that the programme would improve the career pattern of personnel.
Johnson explained that many of them entered the navy without any career plan, while others joined the navy for want of job and what was available.
He said that with this lecture, they would be able to access themselves within the naval establishment to know what they could do well.
“This will help the navy to know the area they can fit into to enhance their performance.
“Planning is very important as it helps you set your goals and that is why we are encouraging all of them to set a goal.” (NAN)
