LAGOS (Sundiata Post) – Ndigbo Lagos, a socio-cultural group of Igbo people resident in Lagos, has condemned security agents over the wanton killing of young Igbo men and women who were exercising their fundamental human rights of commemorating the remembrance of a historical date of importance to the Igbo Nation on May 30. These young folks belonged to the Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOP) and the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOD).
In a statement available to Sundiata Post, president-general of Ndigbo Lagos, Prof. Anya.O.Anya pointed out that the youths were completely unarmed and in procession exercising their fundamental rights to associate when security agents of the Federal Government descended on them with tear gas, followed with salvos of hot and lethal live ammunition that felled over 30 of them with many more injured and brutalised across several states in the South East and South South regions of Nigeria.
“Ndigbo Lagos vehemently condemns this brutal show of force against unarmed and law abiding citizens of the country. This regular killing of Ndigbo without justifiable reasons has reached a crescendo since President Muhammadu Buhari came to power. If the Police do not kill, the Army and Navy will and at other times, Fulani herdsmen will drive into Igbo villages and kill innocent men, women and children.
“While Ndigbo Lagos and Ndigbo everywhere contemplate how to deal with this emerging scenario, we join Ohaneze Ndigbo to observe a seven-day mourning for our dead children and relatives. During this period, we will not attend any town hall or village hall meetings called by any agent of the Federal Government anywhere in Nigeria. As it is Igbo custom, after the burial and mourning period, we can receive condolence visitors from outside”, Anya. O. Anya said.
