AWKA – The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in Anambra said on Thursday that it arrested 259 suspects and secured 27 convictions in its anti-drug offensive in the state in the last six months.The Commander in Anambra, Mr Sule Momodu, made this known in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Awka.
Momodu said among those convicted was a 23-year-old physically challenged man, Emmanuel Ozuah , who was sentenced to four year imprisonment on July 8 by an Awka Federal High Court.
Momodu said that the man was arrested initially in February 2013 at Nkwo market with 300 grams of cannabis and subsequently re-arrested in September with 100 grams of a similar substance.
According to him, of the 259 suspects, 28 were females.
He said that during the period under review, the agency seized 290.93 kg of cannabis, 130.9 grams of cocaine, 12.8 grams of heroin and 117.8 grams of psychotropic substances.
Meanwhile, the efforts of Gov. Willie Obiano to fast track the trial of crime suspects had started yielding dividends with the arrest and prosecution of two drug dealers.
Obiano said this while receiving a delegation at the Governor’s Lodge, Awka, on Thursday.
He said that the judiciary had a fundamental role to play in the fight against criminals and criminalities in the state by ensuring quick dispensation of justice in all the cases brought before them. (NAN)
