Lagos  –   The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) on Friday said it had found a warehouse containing 8.6 tonnes of cannabis in Lagos.
A statement by the agency’s spokesman, Mr Mitchell Ofoyeju, said the cannabis found during the operation was the largest seizure ever made by the agency in Lagos.
According to the statement, the sacks of cannabis were kept in a six-bedroom duplex on Ateoyo Street, Igbeleri-Okoko in Lagos.
It said that the operation, which lasted over 12 hours, was led by the Assistant Commander, Operations and Intelligence, Mr Ojo Ogbechema.
”It was cannabis everywhere , except the sitting room and the kitchen in the house.
”Officers of the agency spent several hours to evacuate the over 8.6 tonnes of cannabis from the house,” it said.
According to the statement, some suspects have been arrested.
It quoted the Lagos State Commander of NDLEA, Aliyu Sule, as saying that the seizure was huge and asking for concerted effort to rid the state of cannabis.
The statement also quoted the NDLEA Chairman, Mr Muhammad Abdallah, as promising to arrest the main suspect, who was said to be on the run.
“This discovery is impressive and it was achieved due to the agency’s strategic approach in eradicating drugs from the country,” he said.
