The National Economic Council (NEC) has issued a one-week ultimatum to three states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) to submit their reports on the establishment of State police.
The directive is in line with NEC’s resolution to create a comprehensive report from all 36 states and the FCT over the creation of State Police.
Recall that President Bola Tinubu, in agreement with state governors, on February 15, 2024, backed state policing to tackle the country’s escalating insecurity. To achieve this, states were tasked with submitting their reports to the Council for review and further action.
The NEC warned that any decision made on the issue would be binding on states that fail to meet the one-week deadline.
