Abuja -The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has urged stakeholders providing humanitarian services to ensure effective synergy to enable them address challenges of vulnerable people during emergencies.
Mr Sani Sidi, Director-General, NEMA made this call in Abuja while presenting a paper on “Caring for Vulnerable Population in Emergency’’ as part of activities to commemorate the 2015 World Population Day.
Represented by Mr Alhassan Nuhu, Director, Disaster Risk Reduction, Sidi said that the 2015 World Population Day focuses on the vulnerable population in emergencies with reference to women, adolescent girls and other class of people.
He said: “The Day highlighted on the plights of the vulnerable segment of the population; with the view to evolve measures to reduce their sufferings.’’
According to him, humanitarian activities face challenges of coordination, collaboration and cooperation, while NEMA provides a platform for all stakeholders to overcome these challenges.
“We try to see that we removed the disconnect between jurisdictions such as the ministries departments and agencies, civil society organisations and other relevant stakeholders,’’ he said.
“To meet the needs of the vulnerable population in emergencies, agencies would need to properly understand the underlying social and economic aspects of vulnerabilities and design best ways to approach it.’’
Mr Guppani Laila, who represented the displaced persons on the occasion, said he arrive Abuja in November 2014, and that many IDPs in the camps needed shelter and basic social amenities.
He appealed to government to restore peace in the northeast so that they could relocate to their localities. (NAN)
