ENUGU – The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), on Sunday, said it responded to 27 relief intervention incidents in the South-East in 2015.
The outgoing South-East Coordinator of the agency, James Eze, disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Enugu.
He said the agency distributed stockpiles of 45 relief items to disaster hit communities and individuals in the year in review.
“Anambra State got 13 relief interventions; while Ebonyi and Enugu States got seven relief interventions respectively in 2015.
“The major relief items distributed during the period include 13,550 wax prints (wrappers), 8,700 blankets, 7,750 plastic buckets, 7, 520 pieces of mattresses.
Others are 7, 026 nylon mats, 6,850 bags of rice, 6,150 bags of cement, 6, 050 pieces mosquito nets among others.
“These relief items covered edible, clothing, building materials, personal effects, toiletries, soaps as well as babies and nursing mothers need,’’ he said.
The coordinator, however, did not give the monetary estimate of the items but said that they were provided from stockpiles of bulk items from the headquarters in Abuja.
Eze said that the incidents involved 61 per cent flooding, 14 per cent wind storm, 7 per cent fire incidents and 7 per cent communal crisis incidents.
The coordinator noted that the agency carried out three successful simulation exercises on 2015 general elections and plane crash within the year under review.
“The agency worked in collaboration with National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) during their induction and passing out exercises.
“We equally worked with the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) on operation eagle-eye during the yuletide period,’’ he said. (NAN)
