This is contained in a statement issued by Mr Sule Oyofo, Chief Press Secretary of the agency in Abuja on Monday.
The statement, made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), alleged that some of the operators construct Base Transceiver Station (BTS), without concluding relevant Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) processes.
“The operators must ensure that they conclude EIA processes with a certificate duly issued by the Ministry of Environment.
“We receive intelligent reports that some operators connive with some telecom officials to flaunt environmental laws.
“Any operators who contravene such law must be sanctioned,’’ it said.
It added that the agency had called for a closer cooperation with the operators to ensure environmental best practices and enhance quality services to subscribers.
The statement said that the partnership would also increase quality environment and that could help to meet the conservation, social, economic, health and other requirements and goals of the nation.
The statement explained that EIA was a process used to predict the environmental consequences of any development project.
It said that EIA ensures that potential problems were foreseen and addressed at an early stage in the projects planning and design.
The statement further explained that BTS was a piece of equipment that facilitates wireless communication between user equipment and a network. (NAN)
