KANO – The National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA) says it is willing to partner corps members to promote awareness on clean environment in Nigeria.
The agency’s North West Zonal Director, Dr Ahmed Kasim, dropped the hint at a lecture delivered at the 2014 Batch “C” NYSC Orientation Course in Karaye, Kano State on Friday.
He said: “In pursuit of its statutory responsibility to resuscitate the integrity of the Nigerian environment, NESREA collaborates and partners with relevant government ministries and agencies as well as the private sector among others.
“It is this cooperation, collaboration and partnership that NESREA earnestly seeks to establish with the corps members in Kano state and other states across the country.
“This takes cognisance of the fact that corps members deployed to communities during the mandatory one year programme, interact in a manner that positively impacts the people’s socio-cultural orientation.
”Sensitising, awareness creation and public enlightenment are veritable tools to sustainable environmental management.’’
The director said that Section 7 (l) of the Act establishing the agency empowers it to create public awareness and provide environmental education on sustainable environmental management.
He said that the agency was also mandated to create awareness among the people, as ensuring a healthy environment was not government’s business alone, but a collective responsibility.
“Our environment is our pride and heritage. It is our duty to protect, preserve and conserve it for the present and future generations,’’ he said.
The director urged corps members deployed to Kano State and other states across the country to participate actively in grassroots environmental awareness campaigns at their respective places of primary assignments.
Kasim also urged corps members to avail themselves of the initiative and contribute consciously towards ensuring healthier and cleaner environment for all Nigerians.
“The agency enjoins corp members in Kano State and across the country to advocate the provision of waste baskets in homes, offices, markets, schools and anywhere litter is generated.
“Discourage the indiscriminate felling of trees/bush burning; encourage planting of trees and ornamentals for urban/rural beautification and horticultural landscaping.
“Discourage indiscriminate dumping of refuse in water channels to prevent the formation of puddles for breeding/incubation of mosquitoes and reptiles among others.
“We hope corps members will educate communities on the need to ensure clean and healthy neighborhood by emphasising the “Going Green” approach and encouraging the people to participate in sustaining the integrity of the environment.’’
The presentation of the paper entitled “Resuscitating the Integrity of Nigerian Environment,’’ was part of activities to educate the corps members on important national issues. (NAN)
