LAGOS – The Deputy Ambassador of Netherlands to Nigeria, Mr Michel Deleen, on Friday said his country planned to support the Lagos State Government in mitigating the effects of climate change in 2015.
Deleen told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos that the state government would need local and international interventions to efficiently manage the problems of ocean surge, erosion, flooding and others associated with climate change.
The envoy said that his country’s discussions with the Lagos State Government on the support had reached an advanced stage.
“We were recently approached by the Lagos State Government on the need for us to support it in reducing effects of climate change in Lagos communities.
“As we all know, Lagos is a coastal state with its attendant problems of pollution, carbon emission, flooding, erosion and other problems of urbanisation.
“We are, therefore, looking at the possibility in 2015, of working closely with the Lagos State Government in reducing the effects of climate change in the state,’’ he said.
Deleen said his country would work within the framework of the United Nations on Climate Change in providing both technical and financial assistance to the state.
He said it was imperative for his country to support the state as more companies from Netherlands were coming to establish in Lagos.
Deleen expressed optimism that the bilateral trade and investments between Nigeria and Netherlands would be strengthened in 2015 and beyond.
He said that his country planned to make more companies from Netherlands to invest in different parts of Nigeria in the New Year. (NAN)
