Enugu – The Commissioner of Police in Enugu State, Mr Emmanuel Ojukwu said the command has mapped out strategies to checkmate crimes committed within the state with a view to arresting perpetrators.
Ojukwu made the disclosure to newsmen in Enugu on Thursday during his maiden news briefing on the activities of the police in the state for the past few months.
The new police boss said that the command had identified kidnapping, armed robbery, cultism, communal clashes and herdsmen’s attack as major crimes in the state.
The commissioner while listing the achievements recorded by his men so far said that they fought gallantly to arrest some of the perpetrators.
According to him, the police have arrested 10 young men headed by an 80-year- old man in Igboeze North Local Government Area, who specialised in kidnapping and illegal manufacturing of local weapons.
Ojukwu said that a double barrel gun, 12 locally short and long guns and many other small weapons were recovered from them.
“In Obinagu in Udi LGA, the police arrested two sisters, who conspired with their boyfriends to kidnap their mother in order to extort money from their brother living in Lagos, while another kidnapped himself to extort money from his family.
“The police also rescued a nine-year-old boy, who was kidnapped at Enugu Ezike but we swapped into action and two suspects were arrested,” he said.
In the area of cultism, the commissioner said that one Aye cult member, Jackson Ede, was arrested in Nkanu East Local Government Area of the state during a shootout with the rival group that lead to the death of a member.
He decried the case of a father, who was arrested for allegedly defiling of his eight-month-old baby.
Ojukwu appealed to members of the public to always furnish the police with vital information that would assist them to arrest the culprits.
The commissioner also sought the cooperation of the media in the fight against crimes in the state.
Ojukwu said that the command was working hard to arrest the extortion of money by some policemen, and warned that any police officer caught in the act would be sanctioned.
On Nimbo killing, he said that the Inspector General of Police, Solomon Arase, had set up a high powered investigative team to fish out perpetrators of the act.
The police commissioner also warned against rumour mongering, which created panic among residents of the state, urging the public to shun rumour in their own interest. (NAN)
