New round of Ukraine peace talks due this week

MOSCOW – A new round of peace talks between separatists in eastern Ukraine and officials from Kiev, Moscow and the Organisation for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) is expected to take place later this week, news reports said on Monday.
A representative of the pro-Russian rebels said that the exact date would be announced later.
Denis Pushilin, the separatist envoy, noted that negotiators had not yet agreed on an agenda.
The main obstacles are Ukraine’s economic blockade of the Donbass, the region’s political status, and an amnesty, Pushilin told newsmen.
Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko had said over the weekend that a new round of talks should be held in Minsk, the capital of Belarus.
However, Russia has since said it wanted the talks to take place.
“We are doing everything to let the Contact Group meeting happen this week,’’ Yuri Ushakov, President Vladimir Putin’s foreign policy aide, told newsmen.
The Ukraine Contact Group had brokered a fragile ceasefire in Minsk in September. (dpa/NAN
