Kano – An NGO, Sarauniya Girl Child Care Foundation (SAGFODA), has called on government at all levels to implement policies and programmes to eliminate violence against women and children in the country.
The President of the Foundation, Aysha Mohammad, made the call in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), on Wednesday in Kano.
Mohammad said the call was imperative to encourage government to be in the forefront of promoting policies and programmes aimed at eliminating violence against women and children.
She said that: “In addition to what the government is doing, we must all lend our voices to the promotion, design and implementation of policies and programmes to eliminate any form of violence against women and girl child.
“Most importantly; we must engage guardians, parents and communities in ensuring that education is prioritised over early marriage and informal employment“.
Mohammad said that the Foundation focused at promoting investment on girl child to ensure that every child, especially girls have the best chance to succeed, a healthy start and the opportunity to learn and protect them from harm.
“The Foundation provides a voice for children who cannot speak for themselves.
“As principle; we inspire and strive to achieve lasting impact for the most vulnerable girl child by transforming their lives for better, to change the course of their future and our community,” she said.
Mohammad urged the people to advocate for programmes that provide access to education, health and safety for young people in the country.
She stressed that we must effectively play our roles as parents and use our influence as people who have been entrusted with girl child to close gender gaps in health and education.
According to her, bridging gender gap is a basic human right obligation essential for national and global development, adding that the Foundation would achieve its objectives with the quality of commitments and sacrifices so far demonstrated.
