Gombe – The Jewel Environmental Initiative, a Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) has trained no fewer than 100 students of Government Girls’ Secondary Doma, Gombe State, on how to turn waste to wealth.
Speaking during the training on Saturday, in Gombe, the Program Coordinator, Ismaila Gombawa, said the training was aimed at creating awareness on environmental challenges and waste management.
He also said that the exercise would train the students on tree planting and how to use water plastics and sachets for other basic needs.
According to him, such wastes are major causes of flooding in most communities.
”Especially now that we are approaching the rainy season, we have to manage it to reduce the risks of flood,” he said.
Gombawa said that campaign on environmental challenges especially on climate change was very important going by the current situation, especially in North East region.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the students were given practical knowledge on how to construct block pavement by using nylon of sachet water and sand.
NAN also reports that the students were given lectures on the importance of tree planting and its management.
The hightlight was when the group presented 100 seedlings to the school for planting.
The coordinator said that, during the rainy season they would bring more for planting to help in reducing environmental challenges.
In his remarks, Malam Adamu Babayo, Vice Principal Administration, commended the the NGO for its initiative and choice of the school.
He said that the step would enable the students to be self-reliant and how to turn waste to wealth.
