Gusau – A Non Governmental Organization (NGO), Himma Community Health Circle Initiative (H-COHEIC), has commenced the training of 200 Traditional Birth Attendants (TBAs), in the state on modern skills.
The TBAs were drawn from rural communities across the 14 local government areas of the state.
Hajiya Zainab Yari, the daughter of Zamfara Governor, who established the organisation, said that the training was to build the capacity of the TBAs on modern skills of attending to pregnant women during delivery.
Represented by Hajiya Jamila Mairiga, Yari said that the aim was to reduce maternal and child mortality in the state.
She added that the move would complement the state government’s efforts in healthcare delivery, especially for women and children.
Yari said that the NGO was focused on addressing major challenges of women and children in the state.
“This is in consideration of the major challenges faced by the Nigerian women and children in accessing efficient and affordable healthcare delivery.
“We all know the kind of suffering that women face during pregnancy, especially during deliveries and after.
”We also know the kind of challenges we face due to inadequate health personnel and facilities in our health centers, especially in the rural communities, “she explained.
She urged the participants to use the training to improve their skills in attending to deliveries in rural communities with limited access to modern health facilities.
In her remarks, the state Commissioner for Women and Children Affairs, Hajiya Balkisu Bungudu commended the organization for the gesture, saying it would reduce maternal and child mortality.
Bungudu, who was represented by the Executive Secretary of the state Science Teachers Board, Hajiya Umma Anka, noted that a well trained TBO was more equipped in ensuring safe delivery and saving lives.
The commissioner said that the government would partner with private organisations and individuals to improve the quality of lives of women and children in the state.(NAN)
