Abuja – Alliance for Credible Elections (ACE) an NGO, has on called on the House of Representatives committee on Electoral Matters, to look into outstanding electoral issues left unattended to by 7th Assembly.
Ms Mma Odi, Acting Secretary-General of ACE, made the call on Wednesday in Abuja during an advocacy visit to Rep. Aishatu
Dukku, Chairperson, House Committee on Electoral Matters.
Dukku represents Dukku/Nafada federal Constituency in Gombe State.
Odi listed some of the issues to include the right to vote by persons living with disability, prisoners’ right to vote and right to vote by officials on election duty among others.
She said these categories of people should be given the opportunity to exercise their franchise during the next general elections.[pro_ad_display_adzone id=”70560″]
She said that the expectation of the CSO was to ensure that persons with disability, prisoners and elections workers were allowed to vote in 2019.
She said that Nigerians in the Diaspora should also be allowed to exercise their right by voting wherever they found themselves.
According to her, over 114 countries around the globe allow Diaspora voting as part of the rights of their citizens
She said the civil society organisations in the country had always engaged the government, INEC and other institutions responsible for organising elections to ensure free, fair and credible elections.
Odi called on the National Assembly to put in place constitutional and legal framework to guarantee free, fair and credible elections.
In her remark, Dukku promised that members of the committee would look into the issues raised by the NGO during their meeting. (NAN)
