LONDON – The Scottish Parliament in Edinburgh on Wednesday voted in Nicola Sturgeon as the Scottish government’s first female minister.
Sturgeon, 44, replaces Alex Salmond, who had already resigned from the role and that of leader of the pro-independence Scottish National Party (SNP).
Salmond’s decision to step down followed the defeat of the pro-independence side in September’s referendum on separating from the rest of the United Kingdom.
However, Sturgeon had already replaced Salmond as SNP leader.
She told the Scottish Parliament that she would be a first female minister “for all of Scotland.’’ (dpa/NAN)
