President Bola Tinubu has issued a directive to reopen Nigeria’s land and air borders with the Republic of Niger, alongside lifting other sanctions imposed on the country, effective immediately.
This decision aligns with the resolutions made by the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government during its extraordinary summit on February 24, 2024, in Abuja.
ECOWAS leaders collectively agreed to lift economic sanctions against the Republic of Niger, Mali, Burkina Faso, and Guinea.
President Tinubu’s directive entails the immediate lifting of several sanctions previously imposed on the Republic of Niger, including:
1. Reopening of land and air borders between Nigeria and Niger Republic, along with the removal of the ECOWAS no-fly zone on commercial flights to and from Niger Republic.
2. Resumption of all commercial and financial transactions between Nigeria and Niger, including the reinstatement of utility services and electricity to Niger Republic.
3. Unfreezing of assets belonging to the Republic of Niger in ECOWAS Central Banks and commercial banks, including state enterprises and parastatals.
4. Restoration of Niger’s eligibility for financial assistance and transactions with institutions like EBID and BOAD.
5. Lift on travel bans imposed on government officials and their families.Additionally, President Tinubu has authorized the lifting of financial and economic sanctions against the Republic of Guinea.
