Awka – The Nigerian Prisons Service, Anambra Command, has received a consignment of drugs and other healthcare items from its national headquarters.
The Controller of Prisons in the state, Mr Emma Nwakeze, who took delivery of the items, told newsmen in Awka on Wednesday that it was the first time the command got such intervention.
Nwakeze said the gesture was in fulfillment of the promise of the Comptroller-General of Prisons, Alhaji Ja’faaru Ahmed, to ensure that inmates across the prisons in Nigeria were healthy.
He promised to ensure that the purpose of the medical intervention was achieved and tasked medical personnel in prisons command to use them judiciously.
“This is the first time in recent history that a large consignment of drugs is being distributed nationwide.
“We are grateful to the Comptroller-General of Prisons for this rare gesture and keeping his promise.
“We promise to ensure judicious distribution and administration of these drugs and medical consumables in our command,” he said.
DCP Usman Ibrahim, who is in charge of Onitsha Prisons, who received the quota for his unit thanked the comptroller-general for the gesture on behalf of other officers.
He assured that the drugs would be optimally utilised to improve health condition of inmates.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the drugs include: antibiotics, antifungal, anti-malaria, cream for skin diseases and analgesics.
