ABUJA – Nigeria is to represent Africa as the Official Country Partner (OCP) at the GITEX Technology Week 2014, scheduled to hold in Dubai, United Arab Emirate, from Oct. 12 to Oct. 16.
Dr Peter Jack, the Director-General, National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), stated this in a statement signed by Mrs Hadiza Umar, NITDA’s Head of Corporate Affairs, on Thursday in Abuja.
Jack said that Nigeria, as the OCP of the show, would represent “Africa’s high-growth Information and Communications Technology (ICT) market”.
According to him, Nigeria, as Africa’s largest economy and population, serves as Africa’s gateway for technology investment.
“GITEX week presents strategic investment inroads into the lucrative Middle East and African ICT markets.
“Africa’s largest economy and population, Nigeria, will serve as the show’s OCP and represent Africa’s high-growth ICT market.
“Nigeria has 120 million mobile users and 87 per cent mobile penetration by population, according to International Data Corporation (IDC),” he said.
IDC is an American market research, analysis and advisory firm, specialising in information technology, telecommunications, and consumer technology.
The director-general said Nigeria had “leapfrogged traditional communications’’ to become an ICT leader’’.
“At GITEX, we will showcase our standing as Africa’s gateway for ICT investment opportunities and best practices on how connectivity can make a social impact,” he said. [eap_d_1] The statement said the week would unveil a range of ‘innovative and exciting” industry features, catering for more than 1500 delegates.
It said international technology professionals from 150 countries are expected to participate at the event, organised by Dubai World Trade Centre.
GITEX, which was inaugurated in 1981, is the ICT business gateway to the Middle East, Africa and Asia Regions.
It provides exhibitors with high returns on investments through direct business opportunities with decision makers as well as maintains its position as a trend setting authority. (NAN)
