A Nigerian-American woman Victoria Ebiere Ogunremi, recently returned $5,700 in cash she found in the toilet of her workplace in New Jersey, United States, in a remarkable act of honesty and kindness.
Her selfless gesture has earned widespread praise from her employer, colleagues, and the individual who lost the money.
Speaking of her decision to return the money, Victoria expressed immediate concern for the person who had lost the money. “The thought of the pain or trauma it could cause inspired me,” she said. “I did not hesitate to return it because of my Christian faith and beliefs. Honesty brings to peace of mind, and it is a key virtue I cherish.”
Victoria took it upon herself to find the owner of the cash before even informing her management. She later received heartfelt appreciation from both her employer and the person who lost the money. “The management was very pleased and proud of me. The owner was incredibly grateful and showered me with praise,” she recounted.
Her coworkers also expressed their admiration, with many saying they were not surprised by her action. “They told me it could only have been me who would do something like this,” she said. Referring to her as a “good woman” and a “woman of God.”
Reflecting on her values, Victoria credited her late father as a major influence. “My father always taught us to be good, honest, and never take what doesn’t belong to us. His principles have guided me throughout my life,” she shared, her voice tinged with nostalgia.
Victoria emphasised that honesty is a principle she hopes to instill in her children and grandchildren. “Whether someone is watching or not, doing the right thing matters. A good name is priceless, and peace of mind is golden,” she said.
She concluded with advice for others: “No matter how tough your situation is, always return what doesn’t belong to you. Doing the right thing brings rewards far greater than anything material.”
Victoria’s actions serve as a shining example of integrity and compassion, reminding us all of the importance of doing what is right, even when it’s not the easiest path to take.
