Governor Umo Eno’s decision to defect from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) met opposition over the weekend when one of his aides refused to follow him and instead resigned from his position.
The governor, who was elected on the PDP platform, announced his defection to the APC during an event held in Uyo, the capital of Akwa Ibom State, earlier this week.
During the announcement, Governor Eno directed all his political appointees to either join him in the APC or resign from their posts if they chose to remain in the PDP.
However, Edidem Monday Itoro, the Special Assistant on Digital Youth Mobilization, openly rejected the instruction and submitted his resignation letter through a commissioner. He said he chose to stay loyal to the PDP, the party that had given him the opportunity to serve.
Itoro’s resignation letter, written in casual pidgin, explained that he had no interest in joining the APC and would rather focus on his personal business. He also expressed that he felt forced out without being shown proper respect, including how his office space and items were handled.
As of now, no other appointees have publicly responded to Governor Eno’s directive to switch parties or step down.
