The Nigerian Navy announced that it lost an officer while rescuing 59 people from drowning in the turbulent waters of the Okpobo River in Rivers State.
According to Commodore A. Adams-Aliu, Director of Information, the Navy received a distress call on July 30, 2024, from MV AMBIKA 4, a dredging vessel working at Okpobo field under contract with Sterling Global Oil Limited. The vessel was in danger of sinking near the entrance of the Okpobo River, a known turbulent area during this season.
The Navy’s Forward Operating Base BONNY sent a rescue team of 10 armed personnel in two boats, led by Lieutenant Commander Gideon Yashim Gwaza. Due to the rough conditions, an additional squadron of three boats was dispatched to support the mission.
The rescue operation was further reinforced by the Nigerian Navy Ship GONGOLA, drones, helicopters, and a Nigerian Air Force helicopter. While all 59 crew members were successfully rescued, Lieutenant Commander Gwaza tragically lost his life during the mission.
