Nigeria’s Super Eagles arrived in Brazil on Tuesday night brimming with confidence.
The team touched down just shy of 10pm local time, and were met at the airport by officials from the Nigeria Consulate led by Salau Bello.
Team captain Joseph Yobo told KickOffNigeria.com that the players were in great spirits.
“It was a good flight, everyone had fun and we are all rested and ready for everything,” Yobo said after the 9-hour haul from Miami.
The squad drove the short distance to their lodgings in Campinas and are expected to begin training in Brazil later on Wednesday. (kickoffnigeria)
Keshi reassures fans on Eagles
Super Eagles coach Stephen Keshi has assured fans that there is no cause for alarm as Nigeria gets set to commence their campaign in the 2014 Fifa World Cup against Iran on June 16.
Many Nigerian fans have been brought back to earth from their hitherto heightened expectations, after the team failed to win any of their warm-up games, having drawn against Scotland and Greece, and suffered defeat at the hands of the United States.
Keshi however insists that the results from the friendlies are not a true reflection of the strength of the team.
The Big Boss stated that the friendlies were meant to serve as rehearsals for the team, adding that the team are ready to do serious business in Brazil.
“We are in Brazil for serious business,” Keshi insisted.
“Friendlies are meant to serve as rehearsals; they are different from competitive matches.
“This is not an excuse for our performance in the matches, but seriously speaking, the results do not mean anything to me, evaluate us in the World Cup.” (kickoffnigeria)
World Cup: Toure facing fitness challenge
The midfield colossus has not been able to complete a full training session with his teammates since he joined them after undergoing surgery last month.
Elephants coach Lamouchi said their medical team had been working hard on trying to get the reigning African Footballer of the Year fit for the weekend.
“We will try and do everything to ensure he can play him,” Lamouchi told reporters.
The injury was suffered as Toure helped Manchester City to the Premier League title on the last day of the season. He then went to Qatar for what was called a minor procedure and joined up late with the Ivorian squad in their training camp in the U.S.
Toure did not play in either of their two warm-up international against Bosnia and Herzegovina and El Salvador. (kickoffnigeria)
