The Nigeria Police Force has summoned Joe Ajaero, the National President of the Nigeria Labour Congress, for questioning over allegations of terrorism financing, cybercrime, and other related offences.
The invitation letter, signed by ACP Adamu Muazu on behalf of the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Intelligence Response Team, warned that a warrant of arrest would be issued if Ajaero fails to comply.
What Led to the Invitation by the Police
SundiataPost reports that the NLC has accused the government of waging a war against the organisation, following a recent raid on its headquarters by security forces.
During a press conference in Abuja last Thursday, NLC leaders rejected the police explanation for the raid and demanded an apology, the return of seized items, and the release of detained individuals.
The NLC also condemned government attempts to interfere with its internal affairs, including a proposed reduction in the tenure of trade union leaders, arguing that such actions violate labour laws and international conventions.
It should be recalled that the police claimed the raid on the NLC headquarters was intended to apprehend an international terrorist suspect, a justification the NLC dismissed as a cover-up, citing inconsistencies in the police’s account.
Why Ajaero Declined Police Invitation
Joe Ajaero declined the police invitation, citing the short notice given and also because of a scheduled appointment on August 20 before he was summoned.
He revealed this in a letter from his lawyers, Falana and Falana Chambers.
When Ajaero Would Honour Police Invitation
Despite initially declining the invitation, Ajaero has indicated his willingness to cooperate with the authorities. He announced that he would honor the police invitation on Wednesday, August 28, 2024.
Ajaero also explained that this date would allow him to properly consult with the NLC’s leadership and ensure that any discussions with the police are conducted within the appropriate legal context.
Expectations as Ajaero Honours the Invitation
As Ajaero prepares to meet with the police on Wednesday, August 28, expectations are high across the nation. Many Nigerians are watching closely to see how the situation unfolds.
Meanwhile, NLC has threatened to embark on an indefinite nationwide strike if anything happens to Ajaero.
Deputy President of the NLC, Ado Kabiru Sani, stated this on Tuesday in a communique issued after the National Executive Council (NEC) meeting.
The NEC meeting was convened to discuss Ajaero’s invitation by the police over allegations bordering on “terrorism financing”.
NEC agreed that Ajaero should honour the police invitation and asked the nation’s workforce to be on standby for further directives should the police take it further.
