The recent 50% increase in telecommunication tariffs approved by the Federal Government has sparked widespread reactions, with the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) considering industrial action as a possible response.
NLC spokesperson Benson Upah has called on Nigerians to take peaceful but decisive action against the tariff hike. He emphasized that citizens have the right to express their dissatisfaction with government policies that cause discomfort.
“The citizens have a right to protest against policies they are not comfortable with. It is up to the citizens to show a certain level of resentment peacefully instead of merely grumbling. You don’t need to be violent or aggressive to drive home your point,” Upah stated.
He also encouraged Nigerians to explore boycotting telecommunication services as a form of protest, noting that such actions could be impactful given that citizens are directly affected by the government’s decisions.
“There is an element of spontaneity in all of this. Clearly, everybody is complaining. Put this into an organized form, but peacefully,” he added.
