ABUJA – The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) on Friday in Abuja called on the Federal Government to empower the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to improve its response capacity.
In a statement signed by Mr Benson Upah, the Head of Information Department of the NLC, the union said the call had become imperative following the rise in emergencies. [eap_ad_1] The statement cited as an example, the recent incident of the collapse of a building belonging to the Synagogue Church of All Nations (SCOAN) in Lagos which left 115 dead.
It described the death of the 115 persons as “ painful and an avoidable tragedy’’.
“We at the Nigeria Labour Congress call for a professional and transparent probe that will lay bare all the facts in order not to compromise the image of the country.
“By so doing, we will not only be putting to rest all the speculations, but we will be preventing similar tragedies waiting to happen.’’
The statement also called for the release of information to the relatives of the victims, noting that they deserved to know the truth about the tragedy.
“We commiserate with the families of the victims, majority of whom are our South African brothers and sisters,’’ it added. (NAN)
