Abuja – The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) on Wednesday expressed concern over the Federal Government’s delay in convening a meeting of the Committee on Palliatives.
The NLC President, Mr Ayuba Wabba, while speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja, said that the was long overdue.
“We were supposed to meet immediately after our return from the International Labour Organisation (ILO) Conference but due to the Sallah festivity, it was postponed.
“However, from the discussion we had with the Minister of Labour and Employment, Sen. Chris Ngige, we are supposed to meet within this week.
“It is our hope that the meeting will still be convened and we will make ourselves available for it.
“Our position paper as organised labour is almost ready and that is where we are now.
“We have also used this period of recess to look at the totality of issues that will address the impact of the harsh economy, especially the increase of fuel price, as it affects purchasing power of the worker.
He said that after the inauguration, the members of the committee had independently done some work, looking at the framework for another committee that would consider the issue of minimum wage.
NAN recalls that the Federal Government accepted to set up the Palliatives Committee and National Minimum Wage Committee in the heat of the nationwide protest by organised Labour over the increase in fuel pump price.
The Committee on Palliatives was inaugurated on June 2, 2016, by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF).
